Tightly lined PTFE board (usually referring to a composite material that tightly adheres polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) to a metal substrate through a specific process) exhibits strong corrosion resistance due to the chemical inertness of PTFE, making it one of the ideal materials for industrial applications to cope with strong corrosive environments. The following provides a detailed analysis from the aspects of material properties, corrosion resistance, application scenarios, and precautions:
1、 Core corrosion resistance characteristics of PTFE
1. Extremely strong chemical inertness
Chemical resistant medium range:
Almost resistant to all strong acids (such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, aqua regia), strong bases (such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide), strong oxidants (such as potassium permanganate, sodium hypochlorite), and organic solvents (such as benzene, carbon tetrachloride, ketones).
Exception: May only be corroded by molten alkali metals (such as lithium, sodium, potassium) and fluorine elements at high temperatures (>200 ℃), but such scenarios are rare in conventional industries.
Comparative data: After soaking in sulfuric acid with a concentration of 98% for one year, the weight change rate of PTFE is less than 0.01%, while stainless steel (such as 316L) may experience pitting or intergranular corrosion.
2. Relationship between corrosion resistance and temperature
Temperature range for use:
Long term temperature resistance: -180 ℃~260 ℃ (up to 280 ℃ in a short period of time).
The effect of temperature on corrosion:
Under low temperature conditions (such as -100 ℃), PTFE structure is stable and its corrosion resistance remains unchanged.
When the high temperature approaches 260 ℃, PTFE still maintains chemical inertness, but its physical strength (such as tensile strength) may decrease by about 20%, and it is necessary to avoid bearing high pressure at the same time.
2、 The influence of tight lining process on corrosion resistance performance
1. The key role of tight lining process
Purpose: To tightly bond PTFE with metal substrates (such as carbon steel and stainless steel) through processes such as hot pressing bonding, compression molding sintering, or explosive welding, in order to avoid interface gaps (which can easily cause medium infiltration, substrate corrosion, or liner peeling).
The standard for excellent tight lining:
The peel strength between the lining layer and the substrate is ≥ 5N/mm (GB/T 19838-2005 standard).
There are no bubbles or cracks on the surface, and the thickness is uniform (tolerance ± 0.1mm).
3、 Application performance in typical corrosive environments
1. Chemical industry
Scenario:
Concentrated sulfuric acid storage tank (concentration ≥ 90%, temperature ≤ 80 ℃): Tightly lined PTFE plate can withstand for a long time, with a lifespan of more than 10 years, which is better than traditional rubber lining (easily carbonized by concentrated sulfuric acid).
Hydrofluoric acid (HF) reactor: PTFE is one of the few materials that can withstand HF (glass and metal can be corroded), and it is important to note that the lining thickness should be ≥ 5mm to resist the penetration of hydrofluoric acid.
2. Pharmaceutical and food industries
Scenario:
Acidic/alkaline liquid storage tanks (such as ambroxol hydrochloride solution, sodium hydroxide cleaning solution): PTFE has no precipitates and meets FDA food contact standards (21 CFR 177.1550) to avoid metal ion contamination of the medium.
Comparison: Stainless steel tanks may release nickel and chromium ions in highly corrosive chemical solutions, which can affect product purity.
3. Environmental protection and sewage treatment
Scenario:
Wastewater tank containing sodium hypochlorite (NaClO): PTFE has strong oxidation resistance, while ordinary plastics (such as PP) will be slowly oxidized and degraded by ClO.
Strong acid neutralization tank (pH ≤ 1): The lining layer can withstand long-term erosion, while the concrete tank body needs frequent repairs.
4. Semiconductor and Electronics Industry
Scenario:
Etching solution (such as a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid) transport pipeline: PTFE lining can prevent metal ions (such as Fe 3 ?) from contaminating high-purity etching solution, ensuring the accuracy of chip manufacturing process.
Comparison: The passivation film on the inner wall of stainless steel pipes may be damaged by mixed acids, leading to metal leaching.
